Come back to your breath. We hear it all the time but it holds so much more weight than we’ve given it credit for. Because it’s all you need for a mind, body, soul detox in sobriety.

Not only does deep breathing change the way we’ve been approaching detoxes, but it’s what we need to thrive- spiritually, mentally, physiologically. So, if you’ve been looking for the perfect sober detox that’s simple and easy, you’re going to want to regularly practice deep breathing.

MIND, BODY, SOUL DETOX

We can only detox from the parasympathetic state. 

The autonomic nervous system has two parts: the sympathetic (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) and the parasympathetic (rest, digest, restore, heal). 

If we’re agitated, stressed, angry, anxious, etc., our bodies cannot detox.

THIS. CHANGES. EVERYTHING. All the herbal supplements, juice cleanses, vitamins, warm lemon water, etc. aren’t as effective if our bodies are operating through the sympathetic nervous system. The majority of us are operating in survival mode most of the time. 

To get into the parasympathetic state, come back to your breath- deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system by sending more oxygen to the brain, telling your brain that you’re safe. There’s more.

Our bodies are designed to release 70% of toxins through breathing.

But we need to breathe properly, otherwise we don’t detox. The breath is more than just a human function. It’s our life force. It helps us to relieve anxiety, stress, and toxins.

HOW MANY MINUTES SHOULD YOU BE DEEP BREATHING FOR?

All you need for a mind, body, soul detox is to practice deep breathing three times a day for 39 seconds each time. Try and maintain a regular deep breathing practice, but not just for the mind, body, soul detox benefits- it will help you to start reducing your stress and anxiety.

HOW TO DEEP BREATHE THE RIGHT WAY:
  • Close your eyes.
  • Take a long, slow deep breath in through your nose. As you inhale, move your breath into your belly. This allows more oxygen into your body while releasing carbon dioxide. You’ll know if you’re breathing through your stomach when it’s rising on the inhale. Breathe in for a count of five.
  • Now exhale for a count of five, feeling your stomach drawing in.
  • Repeat this as many times as you need daily.
