How To Find Your Purpose To Quit Drinking And Stay Sober

SCIENCE OF THE HEART:

To find your purpose to quit drinking, we need to understand the science of the heart first. This isn’t about a mindset (at least, not yet). It’s a heart centered connection. The information below can be found at Heart Math Institute.

  • The heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain to the heart.
  • It possesses the ability to learn, make decisions, store both short and long term memories, feel, and sense.
  • We’re the only species that’s able to develop heart/brain coherence.

HOW TO CONNECT TO YOUR HEART:
  • Place one or both hands on your heart. Our awareness shifts to where we feel the sensation. 
  • Slowly inhale for a count of 5 and exhale for a count of 5. Our breathing naturally slows down when we’re feeling calm so this will help to feel safe in your body. 
  • Have heartfelt gratitude* for one thing to develop the heart brain coherence. 
  • When you find heartfelt gratitude, you’ll feel the connection to your heart- it’s almost like warm, tingly sensations. 
  • When you reach that connection, ask your heart why you need to quit drinking. The answer will come, it may even answer before you finish asking. 

The answer you receive is your purpose for sobriety. Don’t doubt it or try to be logical. 

Remember, the heart makes decisions and sends more signals to the brain than the brain to the heart. It has its own intelligence. Trust it. 


*Heartfelt gratitude is something we feel deep within ourselves, something that stirs up raw, powerful emotions. Pick your gratitude with attention to how saying it makes you feel. 

I’ll give you an example: If you’ve ever been homeless, being grateful for having a bed to sleep in is going to hit you much differently than someone who’s never been homeless. Because you know what it’s like to have gone without, the struggles, and making it out on the other side.

HOW TO STAY SOBER WHEN YOU FIND YOUR PURPOSE:
PURPOSE IS ABSOLUTE

When you’re feeling weak, come back to your purpose. Feelings are fleeting. Purpose is absolute. 

MAKE IT YOUR MANTRA

Your purpose is your mantra. So keep reaffirming it. When it becomes repetitive, it won’t even be something you have to work up to. It becomes a lifestyle. 

ALIGN WITH YOUR PURPOSE

Begin making changes that align with your purpose. If your purpose to quit drinking is to be a better parent, spend more quality time with your kids. If your purpose is to have a relationship with yourself, start tending to your inner world.
