If you’ve been wanting to work with the lunar cycles but don’t know where to begin, creating rituals during the new moon and full moon are a great way to start. And if you have worked with the moon cycles, you’ll notice that I’m releasing with the new moon instead of manifesting.
I’ve found it works better for me to release with the new moon (when the moon is conjunct the sun). Because in that darkness, when the moon appears to be void, we’re able to metaphorically see our shadows. So we’re able to release outdated paradigms, limiting beliefs, self-sabotaging behaviors, toxic relationships, etc.

RELEASING WITH THE NEW MOON IN SOBRIETY
Sobriety is an unfolding of unbecoming everything we think we are to become everything we’ve ever hoped we could be. It’s messy. It’s chaotic. The pain is so tender and raw.
Which is why having a releasing ritual can help you ease into that discomfort and confront the parts of yourself you’ve suppressed. It also helps you to connect with yourself in a way you may have never done before.
Instead of using tarot cards and crystals (they work great too), we’re going to connect with our heart space. Our heart receives intuitive information before our brain so this is going to help you build a trusting relationship with yourself.
Grab a cup of coffee or tea, get comfy, and begin your heart centered new moon releasing ritual.

NEW MOON RELEASING RITUAL
The new moon is at its most potent eight hours before and after the time it’s exact. But if you can’t do a new moon ritual on the day of the new moon, that’s ok.
Sometimes you may be inspired the day before or the day after. Follow your intuition over when you should do a releasing ritual.
STEP 1:
Place one or both hands on your heart. Our awareness goes where the sensations are so this will help you to connect with your heart.
STEP 2:
Inhale deeply. Exhale deeply. Keep repeating this until you feel safe and calm. This helps to activate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, restore, heal).
STEP 3:
When you feel calm, feel gratitude for one thing. Feel into something that resonates with you so deeply and profoundly that it stir up emotions. It’s how you connect to your heart.
STEP 4:
You’ll know when you’ve reached the connection (it’s almost like warm and fuzzy feelings in your heart). When you get there, ask your heart what it’s ready to release. You will get the answer. Trust the first answer you receive is for your highest good. You can ask your heart if you need to release anything else.
The answer(s) will be short and abrupt and may even answer before you finish asking the question.
STEP 5:
Reflect on what you need to release:
- why it/they made you feel safe
- how it/they are holding you back
- if a part of you feels resistant to releasing these habits/people
Write it out on a piece of paper. Make sure you use pen and paper for this. If you only have a few minutes, that’s ok. Work with the time you have.
STEP 6:
Safely burn that piece of paper. Release everything with faith that your prayers have been heard and answered. Know that you’re being guided and protected every step of the way.
STEP 7:
Repeat this ritual every new moon or whenever you feel called to release what’s no longer serving you.
