Whenever I used to read or hear, “Healing is a lifelong journey,” I felt a heaviness within myself that I didn’t know how to describe. Because I was so scared of speaking my mind and didn’t quite know how to articulate the depths of that weight, I jumped right in.

Besides, it became really convenient for me to subscribe to the philosophy that healing was lifelong. So, I indulged in anything and everything I thought would make me healed and enlightened- astrology readings, tarot readings, working with coaches, reading self-help books, listening to content creators on repeat. I traveled everywhere and anywhere I could because I was too scared to go within myself.

“If maybe someone gave me the answers, I would find my freedom”- that’s what I used to tell myself.

Even when the inner voice said, “You don’t need to go to an ashram. You need to go within yourself,” I still didn’t believe in myself. (And, no, I didn’t go to an ashram, I knew not to resist that.)

Because- how do you visit the memories that are too painful to look at? How do you explore the crevices of your psyche that make you feel ashamed to be yourself? How do you confront the parts of yourself you don’t know how to love?

So, I continued down the path of reinventing myself, only to find out I never even knew myself. It was just a fragmented illusion of who I thought I should be.

It was a stark realization- when we get caught up in the cycle of healing being a lifelong journey, we inadvertently allow our pain to define who we are instead of allowing it to be the catalyst for the person we daydream about becoming.

We can be healed. Implying that healing is a lifelong journey means we’re constantly chasing something that always manages to elude us. It keeps us on high alert, trying to find the next threat within ourselves.

I don’t want to look for any more threats within myself. I’ve planted plenty of landmines in the places of my heart I thought I needed to protect. And all it did was create more pain.

When we’re on the prowl, we will eventually find what we’re looking for. So, what do you want to find? Do you want to find the parts of yourself that you believe will never be healed? Or do you want to find the parts of yourself that hold reverence for the chapters you’re ashamed of?

This doesn’t have to be a loud proclamation (though, it can if you want), but it’s your decision. Not someone else’s dictation of your life. You can decide to be healed right now by acknowledging the pain.

It doesn’t mean we ignore the invisible scars, the shame, or humiliation. And it doesn’t mean we convince ourselves that we’re okay. It means we sit with it, not in it.

You sit with your pain by allowing yourself to feel what you need to feel. The hurt, the disappointment, the anger, the shame, the rage- sit with it all. Feel it all.

I’ll see you soon…in the meantime, love yourself so much that even a Hallmark Christmas movie would be jealous.
