When we first get sober, everything feels so chaotic. We’ve outgrown the past version of ourselves while becoming someone we’ve never met. We also don’t trust ourselves enough to make the right decisions.
It can cause us to go down the rabbit hole of over analyzing every potential “what if” scenario or ruminating on our past mistakes. Those cycles keep us stuck and unhappy.
It used to happen to me. ALL. THE. TIME. When I became aware of my thoughts, I changed these cycles with a simple mantra. I’m going to share what I did so you can begin transforming into the person you aspire to be.
Grab a cup of coffee or tea, get comfy, and let’s come into the present moment. Remember to save this post so you can come back to it.

THE PAST MOMENTS
I know that the humiliation hangover is so painful. There were things you’ve said and done that you have remorse for. You wish things played out differently.
Ruminating on it isn’t going to change what happened. But changing the way you think about yourself will change the way you view your past and your life.
Whatever you said or did, you acted in a way you knew how to at that time. You don’t have to keep punishing yourself for it. Give yourself the compassion you would have for anyone else in your shoes.

THE POTENTIAL FUTURE
Maybe you’re in a place where you’re creating potential conversations with people- explaining why you no longer drink, how you’re going to apologize for something you said, or just worried you won’t be able to handle yourself with grace.
You’re not in the future yet. And you may never even be faced with the challenges you think will happen. I know how difficult it can be because you want to make sure you do it right. Trust your future self that if and when the time comes, you’ll be able to handle it.

JUST FOR THIS MOMENT
Sometimes a day can feel too long. At times, a minute is eternal. When that happens, bring your focus to right here and right now.
It takes our brain 2-3 seconds to register the present moment. So you want to make sure that you read the following list of mantras at least once or repeat one mantra a few times.
Just for this moment, I am at peace.
Just for this moment, I love myself.
Just for this moment, I am happy.
Just for this moment, I surrender my fears.
Just for this moment, I feel protected.
Just for this moment, I accept myself.
Just for this moment, I trust that I am being guided.
Just for this moment, I feel powerful.
Just for this moment, I am grateful to be me.
Just for this moment, I am healed.
The emphasis is on just for this moment. When we say those words, we’re bringing the awareness back to the present moment. We’re not lingering in past failures or potential future pitfalls. Give this a try and see how your energy and mood shifts.

I’ll see you soon…in the meantime, love yourself so much that even a Hallmark Christmas movie would be jealous.
