Aside from my family in Taiwan, I didn’t have strong, supportive role models growing up. It was like the way I was raised was the blueprint of what not to do, the antithesis of what family means.
I learned quickly to not depend on my parents and sister for emotional and moral support because my experiences were either turned back onto me or I was flat out ignored. When I got old enough to date, I gravitated towards relationships that reflected the familiarity of “home.”
Being my own therapist became a way of life for me that I didn’t even know any other way. So when I got sober without anyone (not even AA) and worked through the mental illnesses, the abusive relationships, the childhood abuse, being the family scapegoat, and the sexual assaults, I relied solely on myself to find home within.
When I needed motivation to keep pushing forward, I had to dig deep to find the words to inspire a glimmer of hope. That’s what I want to share with you today.
We don’t need countless hours of inspiration. Sometimes all we need are quick snippets to bring ourselves back to this moment– a moment we’ll never have again but also a moment that has the power to change the trajectory of our lives.
