Taking Chances On Yourself In Sobriety

Taking Chances On Yourself In Sobriety

You know the times you give up before you even start something? You’ve already told yourself that it’s not going to work, so it can’t possibly work out.

Or maybe you’ve already tried to do the thing a few times without any success. So, instead of failing, it’s just easier to not do it.
That way, you won’t have to let yourself down. Because the pain of letting yourself down is worse than not trying.

I get it- you’re too tired of the disappointments to deal with it again. You don’t want to keep letting yourself down.

But at some point, the disappointment of not doing something or giving up is eventually going to outweigh the disappointment of making a mistake.

That hobby you want to start, the recipe you want to try, the language you want to learn, the job you want, the business idea, the dream home, the life you wish for- those things are nudges from your soul to take that chance on yourself.

Trust yourself enough to know that even if you make a mistake, you’re going to figure out how to fix it. You’ve already survived the worst. So, does potentially overcooking something or tripping up a few times before you get the hang of it, outweigh the obstacles you’ve overcome?

That’s not to diminish your fears or to invalidate you in any way, but to help shed insight on how our own minds sabotage us, to the point that dismissing our dreams is easier than taking the first step.

Of course, there will be obstacles and challenges along the way. But, they also pale in comparison to the battles you had to fight to be here.

So, even if fear of the unknown is what’s holding you back, do it for the version of you that shed those tears and endured those heartbreaks, the present version of yourself that has the strength and knowledge to push through, and for the future version of yourself that’s thanking you for not giving up on yourself.

Remember, those visions you have in your mind aren’t delusional. Those are seeds planted by the Universe/God to show you how your life is supposed to be.

So, even if it’s one small step like signing up for the language course or mentally committing to trying something new or creating a website or making a shopping list for that recipe, take that step.

When the doubts creep in or you feel paralyzed in fear, ask yourself:

What will I regret more:
The mistakes I’ve made or the chances I didn’t take?

What do I fear more:
Staying in the same place or getting everything I’ve ever wished for?

What will make me more proud:
Playing it safe or blazing my own trails?

Believe in yourself enough to make the mistakes so that you can have everything you want.

I’ll see you soon…in the meantime, love yourself so much that even a Hallmark Christmas movie would be jealous.
