You Can Feel Good Right Now In Sobriety- Here's How

You know when your thoughts get the best of you and you think to yourself, “Oh well, I guess this day is shot. There’s always tomorrow”? So you succumb to being in a crap mood for the rest of the day while hoping tomorrow will be better. 

It’s happened to me also- too much. But the thing is we shouldn’t have to wait till tomorrow to feel better. We should be feeling good right now. 

I’ve been working on this process for 6 months(ish) at the time of publishing this. Not everyday, but when I get caught up in my thoughts, not in a good way. 

It’s a simple three step process and within a few minutes, my energy shifts. So, I wanted to share it with you. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, get comfy, and start feeling good right now.

HERE’S HOW:

STEP 1:

Connect to your heart space (our heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain to the heart. Our heart also has the ability to think, feel, and make decisions). Place one hand on your heart and ask your heart, “Can I feel good right now?” 

If it says no, don’t worry about it. It’s happened to me too. But do accept the answer. You’ll notice that not feeling better or even healing for that matter, is really a lack of acceptance. When you accept that you feel crappy, your mood is going to change. 

If your heart responded no, keep reading this part. If it said yes, you can skip to the next step. Ask your heart, “What’s stopping me from feeling better?” Whatever the first answer is that comes up, that’s it. Stick with that. You’ll know what you need to do to feel better- it’s usually an unhealed wound. That doesn’t mean you can’t feel good right now because you can. You just need to work through the wound while feeling good.

STEP 2:

Be grateful for one thing- maybe you ordered something online and it took longer to arrive than expected but now you finally have it, you finished the project you’ve been putting off, you’ve been committing to a new routine, etc. Have gratitude for something, no matter how small it is. Because it’s the little things that bring us the most joy.

STEP 3:

Put on some music- we know music does wonders for our soul. It helps us to articulate the words we don’t know how to express and makes us feel complete in ways we didn’t even know we were missing out on. It doesn’t matter if it’s Chaka Khan (but it is feel good music), just listen to what makes you feel alive.  

TIP:

If you notice you’re not in the best mood often (it’s happened to me too), come back to your thoughts. Did you have a fake argument in your mind and now you’re pissed? Did you create a scenario in your mind and wound up breaking your own heart? Are you reliving something from the past that you wish had played out differently? Whatever it is that puts you in “one of those moods,” shift that thought. 

HERE’S HOW:

Visualize yourself happy- what are you doing? Where are you? What are you wearing? That’s your happy place.

Hold it in your mind- see the smile on your face, feel the happiness and joy, imagine being in that place and let it flow through you. Hold it for as long as you can. And practice this throughout the day- when you’re washing dishes, folding laundry, making your bed, etc. 

You want this happy place to be your reality now, you don’t want to push this into the “one day” category. Let the Universe/God surprise you. They will deliver as long as you remain focused on being aligned.
