If you’re struggling with afternoon lethargy, these five holistic hacks to overcome the midday slump will help you out. After all, it’s about taking a holistic approach for a wholelistic life.
I’m sure you’ve been there…feeling sluggish and lethargic around 3:00pm. Knowing you only have a couple of hours left at work doesn’t help the cause either. In fact, it only makes it worse.
So you run to the local coffee shop for that cup of Joe with sugar only to get a temporary “high.” You wind up cursing yourself when you get home, vowing to never doing it again.
Well, tomorrow comes along and you find yourself doing the exact same thing as the day before. It winds up being a vicious cycle of debauchery.
Yup, I get it. I’ve been there numerous times and it’s really not much fun or good for your body and psyche.
It’s not healthy- emotionally, physically, psychologically, and spiritually. It’s much more taxing knowing you shouldn’t be doing something and doing it anyway than not doing it in the first place. But I guess that’s the occupational hazard of being human.
I’m not one to subscribe to instant gratification these days. I’ve tried it in the past and well, after falling down the rabbit hole of alcoholism…let’s just say that didn’t work out too well.
I’ve also never been one to resort to western medicine unless it was absolutely necessary. I feel that it’s beneficial, say, if you break a bone or have surgery and need antibiotics. But popping a pill for the slightest headache or during my depression days has never been my thing.
However, if you have depression and find prescriptions work for you, that’s wonderful. I’m not advocating for everyone to steer clear of them. It was just my ethos to find the the root cause of my depression rather than taking antidepressants.
Overcome the midday slump
When it came to curing the midday slump, I was looking for holistic ways to alleviate the lethargy. Luckily, with alternative modalities becoming more mainstream these days, I was able to find a whole bunch of them. But five of them were so effective for me. And that’s what I wanted to share with you today.
Before I get started, please read the following disclaimer:
Please keep in mind that I am not a medical health professional so be sure to seek out guidance from your doctor before attempting anything that I’m saying. If you’re suffering from health complications, something on this list could very well contradict your condition(s).
Yes, you can actually breathe your way into alertness and it’s super simple and free. All you have to do is place your right index finger gently against your left nostril to keep it closed.
Then take long and equal inhales and exhales through the right nostril. Do this until you feel that surge of energy entering your body. It may take a few minutes but it beats being over caffeinated.
Bonus tip: Apply this same technique to the left nostril at night if you’re having trouble falling asleep.
According to ancient Chinese medicine which is still in practice today, we have meridian points located throughout our body which correlate to different organs and therefore impacting our health, including our energy levels.
There are quite a few different points to wake you up, but this particular one is amazing.
Here’s what you do:
Taking both your index fingers, trace a line from the top of each ear until you reach the center of your head. That’s where the acupressure point is.
Once you’ve located it, all you have to do is gently massage it until you wake up. Give it some time. This also acts as a form of self-care so definitely give this a try next time you need to overcome the midday slump.
Remember, this isn’t about instant gratification. It could take a few minutes. It could take ten. Everybody’s different so the results will be on an individual basis.
3. ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are a great holistic hack to overcome the midday slump.
Lemon, grapefruit, orange, and peppermint oils are really great for invigorating and giving that extra jolt.
All you have to do is keep some bottles at your desk and inhale the scent every time you start to feel a little slump in your energy levels. I say to take a whiff of the essential oils because they should never be applied directly to your skin.
However, if you’re mixing essential oils with a carrier oil, then you can definitely rub some on your wrists, temples, and being your ears to perk you right up.
Bonus tip: Use essential oils to make a body scrub for baby soft skin. You can get that recipe here.
4. WARM LEMON WATER
While warm lemon water is raved about (especially by me on several occasions) to drink first thing in the morning, it also provides a pick me up during the dreaded afternoon crash.
It balances out your PH levels which in turn provides you with the much needed extra boost of energy. Dehydration tends to be the culprit when it comes to fatigue so make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water.
If you find that you keep running to the bathroom, it’s because your body is not absorbing the water due to dehydration. So it keeps flushing it out. Once your body gets acclimated to drinking more water, you’ll run to the bathroom less frequently.
5. TAKE A WALK
Instead of going to the local coffee shop when you’re crashing, go for a walk around the block. The sun fueled with getting out of your office chair will naturally lift you up.
Soak in that vitamin D. Get on some grass if you can to give you an extra perk. Really allow yourself to enjoy the time outdoors. You’ll feel so invigorated after a mini break from work.
And there you have it…five holistic hacks to overcome the midday slump. Next time you feel an attack of lethargy, skip that afternoon cup of coffee and try these super simple, easy, and organic ways to wake up and stay alert.
